Mahendran Thiruvarangan is a PhD candidate in English at the Graduate Center, City University of New York. He obtained a BA special degree in English from University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka and an MA in English from University of Massachusetts, Amherst. He is currently writing his dissertation which explores the relationships between ideas of sovereignty and cosmopolitanism in South Asian literature and human rights narratives. His research interests include nationalism, subaltern studies and radical democracy. His article on Nuruddin Farah’s Maps was recently published in the Journal of Postcolonial Writing. Prior to starting his graduate studies in the US, Thiruvarangan taught English as a Second Language at University of Peradeniya and English Literature at University of Jaffna. He taught freshman composition and courses in literature at University of Massachusetts Amherst and Queens College, City University of New York. Thiruvarangan writes opinion pieces on important socio-political issues concerning Sri Lanka in English and Tamil in the Sri Lankan media.
