History 166: History and Memory/ English 110: Writing Memory (a)

Using examples from post-Civil War America, South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and the work of West African griots, students will study techniques of memory, the brain’s construction of memory, and how to evaluate memories as evidence. In English 110, students will analyze texts that discuss memory from multiple perspectives, and create a portfolio of polished writing that engages on-going debates about personal and collective memory.
